The Gender Recognition Act 2004 provides a legal process for transgender people to obtain a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), changing their legal gender for all purposes including birth certificates.

Pwyntiau allweddol

  • Gender Recognition Panel considers applications for Gender Recognition Certificates
  • Applicant must have lived in acquired gender for at least 2 years and intend to continue
  • Medical evidence of gender dysphoria required
  • Full GRC changes legal gender for all purposes including birth certificate
  • Interim GRC if applicant is married — allows annulment then full certificate
  • Offence to disclose information about a person's application (s.22)
